5 Easy Steps on How to Get a Texas Driver’s License!

So, you’ve moved to Texas! You've swapped the coast for cowboy country, and now it’s time to tackle that infamous rite of passage—getting a Texas driver’s license. Whether you're a teen taking the test for the first time or a seasoned driver just making the switch, let's make this process as easy (and dare I say, fun?) as possible.

Now, if you’re moving here from another state or even Canada, here's some good news: you don’t have to take the written or driving tests all over again! Just swap your current valid license for a Texas one and provide documentation proving your identity. But fair warning—surrendering that old license might feel a bit like handing over a piece of your past life. Don’t worry, Texas will take good care of you.

Get Your Vehicle Inspected

This is the easy part, certified inspection stations are all over! Here's a link to help you find the closest to you:

TxDPS - Vehicle Inspection Locator (texas.gov)

Register Your Vehicle

After your inspection, you're ready to register your vehicle at your county tax office. Don't forget to bring these documents with you!

  • Proof of completed vehicle inspection
  • Your insurance card & printed policy (if you still have an out of state plan)
  • A completed 130-U form ( Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U) (txdmv.gov) )
  • Your car title or proof of owenership

Make an Appointment

Beat the line and make an appointment with your closest DPS Office! Don't forget your important documents!!!

  • Original documents proving your identity, social security number, and legal status (list of approved documents here:  DL-57 a (aceable.com)
  • Proof of Texas residency
  • Vehicle registration & insurance card
  • Your out of state drivers license (which you'll be required to forfeit, HELLO TEXAS DRIVER!)

Driver License Services – Appointments | Department of Public Safety (texas.gov)

Fill out the Application

Get in & out quickly, have your form printed out before you arrive! (don't worry, if you forget they will provide you with one).

  •  Driver license or ID card application for Adult - over 17 yrs (texas.gov)

Celebrate with your Temporary License Until You Get Your Official One!!!!

And just like that, you're one step closer to fully embracing your new Texas life. Welcome to the Lone Star State, where the rules are simple, the test is easy (maybe too easy!), and the adventure is just beginning. Happy driving!

The Teen Test Experience (Texas Style!)

In Texas, a 15-year-old can get their learner’s permit after passing the written knowledge test—just like my teenager (see left), who studied on the way to the exam and passed with flying colors. Yep, we now have a new driver in the house. Yikes! Here are a few fun rules for your young driver to keep in mind:

Supervised Driving Only:

  • Teens with a learner’s permit must drive with a licensed adult (21 or older) in the front passenger seat. Perfect excuse for some quality bonding time, right?

No Cell Phones Allowed:

  • No texting, scrolling, or even hands-free calls while they’re driving. This rule’s in place to help them stay focused and safe, even if it does mean fewer TikToks.
