Texas Gov. Greg Abbott promises largest property tax cut in state history
Gov. Greg Abbott was sworn in for a third term 1/17/23 with a promise to usher in the largest property tax cut in state history, an appealing prospect for many Texans.
Abbot's remarks broke no new ground, and his policy goals largely mirrored his campaign pitch to voters.
He touted Texas’ economic growth under his leadership and said people are coming here to flee “the oppression of high taxes” and red tape in other states.
In a 13-minute speech, Abbott sketched out an agenda that includes cutting property taxes, giving parents more choice in education, bolstering state infrastructure and beefing up border security.
Abbott said the money should go back to Texans in the form of property tax relief.
“Make no mistake, that surplus does not belong to government,” he said. “It belongs to the taxpayers and we will use that budget surplus to provide the largest property tax cut in the history of the state of Texas.”
